  1. On Margin-Practice that allows people to buy stock with a down payment of portion of the full value.

  2. Black Tuesday-Day the stock market crashed,signaling start of the Great Depression.

  3. Great Depression-Worst period of economic decline in United Stes history beginning in 1929.

  4. Bankrupt-Unable to pay debts.

  5. Relief Program-Government program to help the needy.

  6. Soup Kitchen-Place where food is provided to the needy a little or no charge.

  7. Public Works-Projects built by the government for public use.

  8. Hooverille-Group of shacks in which the homeless lived during the Great Depression.

  9. Bonus-Additional sum of money.

====Bonus Army-Veterans who marched to Washington in 1932 to demand immediate payment of a World War 1 bonus.----

  1. Polio-Highly infectious disease that causes inflammtion of the nerve cells of the brain stem and spinal cord,leading to paralysis.
  2. Bank Holiday-Closing of banks for four days during the Great Depression.
  3. Fireside Chat-Radio speech given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt while in office.
  4. Hundred Days-First Hundred Days of President Franklin D. Roosevelt presidency.
  5. New Deal-Program of President D.Roosevelt to end the Great Depression.
  6. Civilan Conservation Corps-New Deal program that hired unemployed men to work on natural conservation projects.
  7. National Recovery Administration-Government agency set up during the Great Depression to enforce new codes designed to stabilize industry.
  8. Tennessee Valley Authority-New Deal program that builds dams to control flooding and produce cheap electric power.

  1. Pension-Sum of money people paid to people on regular basis after they retire.
  2. National Labor Relations Act-Law passed in 1935 that protects American workers from unfair management practices.
  3. Collective Bargain-Process by which a union repersenting a group of workers negtiates with mangement for a contact.
  4. Sitdown Strike-Strike in which workers refuse to leave the workplace until a settlement is reached up.
  5. Deficit Spending-Government practice of spending more than is taken in from taxes.
  6. National Debt-Total sum of money that a government owes to others.

  1. Migrant Worker-Person who moves from one region to another in search of work.
  2. Civil Rights-The rights due to all citizens.
